Youths Throw Stones at Homes in Londonderry's Fountain Estate
Youths threw stones at homes in Londonderry's Fountain estate on Monday evening. The Police Service of Northern Ireland responded to reports of anti-social behaviour in the Nailors Row and Fountain area around 20:00 BST. Officers engaged with the group and the youths dispersed with no further incidents reported.
Democratic Unionist Party assembly member Julie Middleton said residents feel scared and intimidated. She noted prior incidents including fireworks thrown into the estate on Sunday and sectarian slurs shouted from walls earlier on Monday. Middleton expressed concern for elderly residents in a nearby care home who should feel safe.
Middleton called the stone-throwing disgraceful and questioned who influences the very young individuals involved. She urged parents to discuss with their children that violence is wrong and stressed the need to stop it to prevent injuries and support community relations.
Foyle MP Colum Eastwood described the incident as sectarian. He stated Fountain residents face regular attacks with stones, bricks and bottles around this time of year. Eastwood appealed to parents to explain to children the impact of such attacks on families.
Police requested anyone with footage or information to contact them on 101, submit online reports, or reach Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
