Police in Londonderry responded to a group of about 15 youths gathered at the Irish Street interface on Friday evening, May 1. The youths had face coverings and carried flags as a band parade passed through the area around 21:45 BST.

Superintendent Sinead McIldowney stated the group first spoke with officers and then left the scene briefly. They returned with paint bombs, heavy masonry, and petrol bombs. The youths threw these items at police, causing minor damage to two vehicles.

No injuries occurred to officers, members of the public, or properties. Disorder continued until the crowd dispersed around 01:00 on Saturday. Officers stayed in the area to identify those involved.

McIldowney said police are engaging with local representatives and the community to prevent repeats. She asked parents to ensure children avoid such actions that risk injury.

She noted participants risk long-term consequences from involvement in behaviour that harms communities. Enquiries continue with plans for proactive arrests.

McIldowney called the diversion of police resources from crime victims unacceptable. Information can be given to police on 101, reference 1773 01/05/26, online at www.psni.police.uk/makeareport, or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
