The Department of Education announced funding for an extension at Park Lodge primary school in north Belfast. The project faced a three-and-a-half-year delay since approval in 2022.

The investment forms part of over £130 million allocated for new builds at four schools and expansions at nine others. Park Lodge will receive a three-storey addition with 12 classrooms, a bridge link to the current building, reconfigured parking with extra spaces, and restored hard play areas.

SDLP councillor Carl Whyte for North Belfast welcomed the funding. He noted the extension will provide modern facilities and improve the learning environment at Our Lady of Lourdes. Whyte mentioned chairing the council's planning committee that approved the project in September 2022. He contacted Education Minister Paul Givan for guarantees against further delays.

Education Minister Paul Givan stated on Thursday that such projects serving schools in poor condition must move forward. He highlighted the need for replacement buildings after years without investment. Givan said advancing to construction will benefit schools, pupils, communities, and the construction sector.
