Two Men Challenge Terrorism Charges Over PSNI Data Breach Material
Two men charged with terrorism offences connected to a PSNI data breach will challenge the prosecution case at a hearing in Omagh Magistrates' Court.
Brian Francis Cavlan, 49, of Corrainey Park in Dungannon, and Rory Martin Logan, 44, of Ross Close in Enniskillen with an address at HMP Maghaberry, first appeared in court in February 2025. A detective sergeant stated the charges relate to the breach.
The PSNI breach took place in August 2023 when details of more than 10,000 staff and officers were released by error in response to a Freedom of Information request.
Cavlan faces charges for possessing two spreadsheets with PSNI officers' and staff members' details on April 12, 2024. Logan faces the same charges for June 11, 2024. The material was found on their mobile phones.
The detective noted Cavlan had screenshots of parts of a spreadsheet but no evidence of downloading from the source. The spreadsheet had been shared many times.
Defence barristers stated the prosecution evidence is disputed and will be challenged through submissions on case papers, with no witnesses needed.
Deputy District Judge Austin Kennedy set the committal hearing for May 14. The outcome will determine if the men go to crown court for trial or if charges are dismissed.
