Resurfacing Work at Derry City Cemetery Set to Start After Tender Evaluation
Council officials in Derry plan to evaluate tenders for resurfacing roads and paths at City Cemetery within the next week to ten days. The work will follow contract award. Sinn Féin councillor Emma McGinley raised concerns at April's Environment and Regeneration Committee meeting about delays and worsening potholes due to weather.
McGinley noted receiving multiple calls from constituents asking about the start date. She pointed out that people value access to cemeteries without vehicle damage. The budget of £300,000 for resurfacing at district cemeteries was approved last June.
Head of Environment Conor Canning informed the committee in October that work at City Cemetery, Ballyoan and Strabane cemeteries would proceed after tendering and procurement. At the April meeting, Canning confirmed all tenders had returned for evaluation.
Derry and Strabane district recorded £2,460,091.03 in public liability claims from road defects between 2020-21 and 2024-25, according to Department for Infrastructure figures.
