Dromara Man Receives Suspended Sentence for Harassment and Fraud
Aaron McMullan, 44, from Banbridge Road in Dromara, appeared at Lisburn Magistrates Court on charges of harassment and fraud by misrepresentation.
The court heard that on September 26, 2024, the man's former partner reported harassment to police. The pair had dated for two years. McMullan misrepresented his finances by claiming he sold property and had significant funds. He borrowed £1,800 from her for supposed property fees but did not use it as stated.
When she requested repayment, he returned £140. She told him not to contact her further. On October 26, 2024, she received a video from him showing a knife to his throat with a farewell message. She alerted police due to concern, leading to his arrest.
In interview, McMullan admitted the contact and taking the money. He stated he acted out of love for her.
The Public Prosecution Service sought a restraining order. Defence noted McMullan paid £1,600 in compensation and cited his past mental health issues. Defence added he now holds a job, is in a new relationship, attended AA, accepts the charges, and no further incidents occurred.
District Judge Rosie Watters imposed a four-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. She ordered £1,600 compensation and a two-year restraining order.
