Carlos Cardia, 20, from Obins Street in Portadown, appeared at Craigavon Magistrates Court charged with assault. The incident occurred at his home on March 13, 2025.

Police received a report from the injured party, Cardia's ex-girlfriend, who claimed he assaulted her during a verbal argument. The prosecutor stated Cardia placed his hands on her shoulder and pushed her onto the living room sofa.

The woman told police Cardia acted aggressively, leading her to fear for her safety. She locked herself in the bathroom. She left after alerting a neighbour, who calmed Cardia. Police arrested him shortly after.

Cardia's solicitor, John McAtamney, said the woman had lived with Cardia and his parents, who attended court. She moved out following the incident. McAtamney noted Cardia regrets the event, has no prior convictions, and was in low mental health at the time.

McAtamney added Cardia accepts he caused her fear by pushing her. He described the relationship as toxic and now ended. Cardia lives with his parents, works three days a week, and seeks to move forward.

District Judge Michael Ranaghan stated Cardia needs professional help for anger management issues to ensure appropriate future relationships and awareness of domestic violence harm. The judge sentenced him to 12 months probation and 70 hours community service.
