Sectarian Hate Crime Reported on Train and at Derry Station
Police in Derry received a report at 3:35pm on Easter Monday, April 6, of a fight involving youths in the Waterside Link area. The fight started on the Ballymoney to Derry train and continued at North West Regional Station, where bottles were thrown.
Officers attended the scene and spoke with a large group of teenage males. One reported being pushed. A 17-year-old boy reported being kicked by an unknown male.
A man at the scene said a group of intoxicated individuals with beer bottles chased teenagers from the train. He stated the teenagers wore Celtic F.C. jerseys and were targeted after a paratrooper flag was displayed on the train.
The man said a bottle thrown at a woman missed her head. He added that someone tried to punch him while recording. Kicks were aimed at a fleeing teenage boy but did not strike him.
The man told police the boy had been assaulted. He said individuals shouted sectarian insults at the woman as she retrieved a bag. Both the man and woman reported feeling unprotected by police at the scene.
The woman said she received sectarian insults. The pair lodged a complaint with the Police Ombudsman and seek convictions and a review of police actions.
A PSNI spokesperson confirmed the incident as a sectarian-motivated hate crime. Enquiries continue, with an appeal for information, CCTV or video footage via 101, reference 904 of 06/04/26.
