Aughnacloy Man Charged Over Omagh Bar Assault Causing Severe Injuries
Alexander Cassells, 36, from Hill Crest in Aughnacloy, faces charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent following an incident in an Omagh bar on April 12.
Police and ambulance attended after reports of a man being repeatedly stamped and kicked. Four witnesses stated Cassells had fallen asleep at the bar. They said the victim woke him as the bar closed, after which Cassells struck the man and kicked his head and chest.
The victim sustained seven broken ribs, a broken nose and a broken eye socket. Hospital staff reported he struggled to breathe upon arrival. Doctors later indicated he requires facial reconstruction surgery.
Cassells remained in the bar after the assault. Police arrested him and charged him overnight before Omagh Magistrates Court this week. He also faces a charge of criminal damage to a police cell van.
In police interview, Cassells said he drank from 5pm on Sunday and recalled no details of the incident. He viewed CCTV footage and confirmed he did not know the victim.
Police opposed bail due to Cassells's record of violent offences. Defence counsel noted his admissions in interview and lack of connection to the victim or witnesses.
District Judge Conor Heaney granted bail at £500 with conditions. These include no alcohol consumption, no entry to licensed premises, exclusion from Omagh except for court, a 10pm to 7am curfew, a surety and no contact with the victim or witnesses.
The case returns to Omagh Magistrates Court on May 12.
