Judge Delays Sentencing of Tyrone Fraud Convict Over Medical Holdup
A Crown Court judge in Leeds has further delayed the sentencing of Kevin Phelan, a 62-year-old from Omagh in Co Tyrone, due to a postponed medical procedure.
Phelan faces sentencing for his role in a fraudulent pension liberation scheme. A jury convicted him and two Yorkshire-based co-conspirators in August 2025 after a lengthy trial.
Phelan did not attend the trial's verdict or a January sentencing hearing. At the January hearing, one co-conspirator received an eight-year jail term and another a five-year term.
The court adjourned Phelan's sentencing in January to allow necessary medical treatment. His lawyers reported via email that the procedure had been delayed.
Judge Penelope Belcher expressed frustration at a mention on Monday. She adjourned the case to the end of next week and requested evidence if the procedure remains undone.
The judge noted that warrants issued in England can be served quickly in Northern Ireland. Phelan was previously absent due to treatment in Northern Ireland for heart issues.
