A Co Tyrone man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for his part in a pension fraud scheme.

Kevin Phelan, 63, from Omagh, was convicted alongside two co-defendants after a jury trial at Leeds Crown Court. The convictions relate to a conspiracy to defraud pension holders and cheat the UK Revenue between January 2013 and December 2014.

Judge Penelope Belcher imposed the sentence on Thursday. Half the term must be served before release on licence can be considered.

Phelan did not attend the January hearing where his co-conspirators received sentences of eight years and five years. His own sentencing was adjourned at that time for medical treatment.

The jury returned its verdicts in August 2025. Phelan was absent from court for the verdict due to treatment in Northern Ireland for heart issues.

Phelan previously worked as a land agent in England in the 1990s. He did not give evidence to the Moriarty tribunal, which examined property deals involving Independent TD Michael Lowry and businessman Denis O'Brien.
