DAERA Minister Rejects Raw Sewage Posters at Belfast Lough as Unofficial
Posters warning of raw sewage contamination appeared along the County Antrim shoreline of Belfast Lough between Whiteabbey and Whitehead. The notices state the lough holds high levels of raw sewage. They instruct people to avoid entering the water and to keep pets and children off the beach.
Andrew Muir, minister for the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, confirmed no Stormont department erected the posters. The department became aware of them on April 13 and contacted NI Water. NI Water stated it did not produce the signs.
Muir called the posters misleading. He stressed the importance of accurate information for the public on bathing water quality. The department tracks water quality at sites including Crawfordsburn and Helen's Bay.
Muir recognised issues with raw sewage discharges into the lough. He described Belfast Lough as an essential habitat for local wildlife and a valued area for nearby communities.
The minister prioritised stronger regulation and enforcement against polluters. He plans legislation to raise fines for water pollution. Muir holds polluters accountable.
