Councillor Advocates Pedestrian Crossing for Bryansford Road Safety
Alliance councillor Jill Truesdale has called for a pedestrian crossing in Bryansford, County Down. She cited increased traffic volume in the village. New housing has brought more residents to the area.
Truesdale noted more visitors access Tollymore Forest Park via a back entrance. The straight road attracts speeding drivers, including those on unauthorised loops. Police efforts through Operation Lifesaver have reduced such antisocial behaviour.
Visitor numbers also rise for routes to Slievenaman and Moneyscalp mountains. This causes parking problems on the road. A crossing would improve pedestrian access and ban parking on zigzag markings for better visibility.
Truesdale proposed including the crossing in upcoming Department for Infrastructure resurfacing works on the Bryansford to Hilltown road. She also requested a mobile speed indicator device on the stretch. These devices show drivers their speed and gather data for safety improvements.
The councillor highlighted risks from speeding, distraction and inattentiveness. The Hilltown Road offers scenic views through the Mourne area and serves as a cycling route. She stressed the need for safety measures to protect drivers, pedestrians and visitors.
