Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins visited the entrance to Gosford Forest Park in Markethill, County Armagh, to discuss a potential pedestrian footbridge over Gosford Road. The site lies on the main Newry to Armagh road.

Kimmins met with local MLA Gareth Wilson, along with ABC Council and Forestry Service officials. The visit followed pressure to address safety issues after several serious collisions and fatalities near the location.

Wilson called the footbridge a personal priority to ensure safe pedestrian access between Markethill and the forest park. He described the meeting as productive and noted the need for collaboration between local and regional government.

The MLA stated that the Department for Infrastructure would lead any footbridge project. He welcomed Kimmins's interest in exploring options and suggested starting with a technical study of the sites on both sides of the road.

Wilson plans to keep lobbying to build momentum on the issue. He expressed satisfaction that discussions have begun involving the Department for Infrastructure, council, and Forestry Service.

In February, Kimmins responded to a question from Wilson by acknowledging significant safety concerns on the road, which she travels frequently. She noted that reducing the speed limit was unlikely under current policy but agreed to have officials review a prior assessment for a pedestrian crossing.

Kimmins also offered to consult partners including the council and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs. She recognized recent fatalities and indicated willingness to pursue enhancements.
