DUP MLA Gary Middleton to Resign from Northern Ireland Assembly Over Mental Health Issues
DUP MLA Gary Middleton plans to resign from the Northern Ireland Assembly on Friday. He represents Foyle and cited significant mental health challenges as the reason for leaving public office.
Middleton has served as an MLA since 2015. He previously held a councillor position, elected in May 2011.
In a statement, Middleton explained that recent ill-health limited his ability to represent constituents. He chose to step down to prioritize full recovery. He receives treatment from the National Health Service, supported by family and friends.
Middleton expressed hope from this support and aimed to encourage others facing similar issues by noting help is available.
DUP leader Gavin Robinson described Middleton as a dedicated servant to people in Londonderry and surrounding areas. Robinson called him a strong voice for unionism in Foyle since 2015.
Robinson noted Middleton faced threats from republicans but stood firm for constituents and principles. The party regrets his departure and commits to supporting his recovery.
