Portaferry Councillor Pushes for Earlier Strangford Lough Ferry Service
A councillor from Portaferry advocates for an earlier start to the Strangford Lough ferry service. Joe Boyle proposes a 7.15am departure from Portaferry to Strangford, 30 minutes ahead of the current 7.45am schedule. This adjustment would allow the return trip from Strangford at 7.30am.
Boyle contacted Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins with the request. He argues the change would benefit users including those in construction, agriculture and fishing by moving 25 to 28 vehicles across the lough before 8am. The councillor states this would reduce queuing, improve traffic flow and enhance road safety in nearby towns.
The proposal comes amid recent requests from Strangford MLA Michelle McIlveen for a feasibility study on a bridge between Portaferry and Strangford to address congestion in Newtownards. Minister Kimmins declined, noting no plans for a bridge before 2035.
Boyle prioritises immediate improvements to the existing ferry operations over long-term bridge options. He highlights Strangford Lough as a protected marine environment that could face significant environmental and legal obstacles to bridge construction.
The councillor urges realistic expectations about a bridge and focus on deliverable changes to the ferry timetable.
