Sinn Féin MP Pushes for Strangford Lough Bridge Feasibility Study
Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard welcomed unanimous support from Newry, Mourne and Down Council for a feasibility study on a fixed link bridge across Strangford Lough.
Hazzard contacted Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins to commission a study for a bridge connecting Portaferry and Strangford villages.
The council's support came after a similar motion passed at Ards and North Down Council last month.
Hazzard stated a fixed link would improve regional connectivity for commerce and emergency services.
He noted the project could enhance climate resilience by using tidal currents in the Narrows for renewable energy and adding cycling lanes.
Hazzard plans to meet the minister soon to advance the project.
The study would assess structural options in the area's sensitive environment while addressing net-zero requirements.
