North Antrim MP Jim Allister has criticised the Scottish Government's award of most of a £45 million contract for zero-emission buses and coaches to a Chinese manufacturer. He argues the decision fails to support UK industry, including Ballymena-based Wrightbus.

Wrightbus employs more than 2,000 people in Ballymena and holds the position of the UK's last domestic bus manufacturer. Allister highlighted its role as a leading producer of electric and hydrogen-powered buses.

Allister stated that taxpayers' money should strengthen the UK economy and support local jobs rather than overseas industry. He called the contract allocation indefensible given Wrightbus's capabilities.

The MP raised related concerns in Westminster Hall weeks earlier. He noted that political commitments to UK manufacturing lack substance if large contracts go abroad, particularly to China.

Wrightbus owner Jo Bamford also criticised the decision. Allister referenced Chancellor comments on the importance of domestic production, saying actions do not match those words.

Allister urged the UK to prioritise its own manufacturers in public procurement.
