Artist Robin Price Leads Air Pollution Art Workshop at North Belfast School
Artist and physicist Robin Price held a workshop with students at Mercy College in North Belfast. The event formed part of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland's Art Lending Scheme in Schools.
The scheme lets schools borrow and show works from the Arts Council's Contemporary Art Collection at no cost. Mercy College displays six pieces, including Price's digital photograph Outer Nairobi, Kenya from 2018.
Price explained to students how he produced the Air of the Anthropocene series. The project involved scientists worldwide who measured air pollution levels using new technologies and photography.
Other works on display include Margaret Arthur's Winter Woods monoprint from 2019, Ian Cumberland's The Mercy Seat oil on canvas from 2006, Oliver Jeffers's The Substitute Window oil on canvas from 2005, Tim Millen's Conference oil on canvas from 2020, and Gareth Reid's Waterhole pastel and charcoal on canvas from 2013.
Joanna Johnston, Arts Development Officer for Visual Arts and Collections at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, stated the council aims to bring artworks into schools for wider access. She noted the initiative highlights Northern Ireland artists and inspires students.
The Contemporary Art Collection contains over 700 works by Northern Ireland visual artists. The Art Lending Scheme for schools launched in 2019, with 19 schools participating so far.
