Alleged Machete Attack Victim Withdraws Statement in Dungannon Case
Martin Joseph Groogan, 43, from Gortin Crescent in Dungannon, faces charges of attempting to murder his ex-partner and possessing a knife. The alleged incident took place on November 1, 2025, in Dungannon and involves domestic violence aggravation. He remains in custody since his arrest.
Police received a dropped 999 call where a woman asked what she should say. Paramedics contacted Groogan, who was highly intoxicated and claimed foreign nationals had attacked the woman after breaking into her house.
Officers found the woman with heavy bleeding from multiple wounds, including a severe leg injury, stomach slices, and leg cuts. They applied a tourniquet to her leg and first aid to other injuries. An air ambulance assessment confirmed the tourniquet saved her life.
Groogan had fled to a house in Armagh. Police arrested him hiding in the roof space. A blood-stained machete was found in a cupboard at the woman's home.
The woman told police in hospital that she asked Groogan to leave her house but he refused, grabbed a knife, and slashed her. She lay bleeding and begged him to call an ambulance while he threatened further attack. She underwent surgery and requires plastic surgery at another hospital.
Groogan claimed he was asleep on the sofa when three black males entered and attacked her. He panicked and left but provided no further details and later gave no comment replies.
A detective opposed bail citing Groogan's 138 prior convictions, including serious violence. A proposed Armagh release address was unsuitable due to the occupant's violent history.
District Judge Francis Rafferty refused bail. At the latest hearing, the prosecution confirmed the alleged victim withdrew her statement and does not wish to proceed. The case continues and is adjourned to April 14 for an update on charges or a new bail application.
