Omagh Crematorium Plan Receives Outline Planning Permission
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council councillors granted outline planning permission for a crematorium with chapel of rest at Greenhill Cemetery in Omagh.
The approval came at a recent planning committee meeting. Sinn Féin councillor Stephen McCann proposed the decision. He stated that the facility would assist families who travel long distances for cremations during bereavement.
DUP councillor Errol Thompson supported the plan. He pointed out that many residents go to Newtownabbey or Roselawn in Belfast for the service. Thompson added that local options matter for those who select cremation.
The proposal first gained approval in November 2012. Delays followed due to consultations and talks of a joint project with Mid-Ulster and Derry City and Strabane Council.
Residents currently travel to Cavan, Newtownabbey, or Roselawn for cremations. Next steps include a consultation with NI Water on linking to Omagh's waste water treatment works.
The committee learned the consultation arrived late. NI Water continues its review with no major issues anticipated.
Permission includes 10 conditions. Work must start within five years.
