Tullyvar Recycling Centre in Tyrone Draws School Visits for Environmental Education
Sinn Fein councillor Deirdre Varsani commended efforts to convert a former council dump near Aughnacloy into a recycling centre. The site, known as Tullyvar Recycling Centre, now supports solar panel installation, planting initiatives, and gas management measures.
Varsani highlighted the centre's role in local education during a Mid Ulster District Council meeting. Local schools regularly visit to learn about recycling and participate in tree planting.
The Tullyvar Joint Committee, established in 1992 by predecessor councils, includes five representatives from Mid Ulster and Fermanagh and Omagh Councils. Varsani serves on the committee.
The committee met on February 12. In 2025/26, 50 pupils from four schools visited during Compost Week UK in 2025.
Seventy pupils and staff from three primary schools attended for World Environment Day on June 5, 2025.
Nine members from Killeeshil Scout Group visited twice in summer 2025 for community volunteering activities.
On November 25, 2025, for National Tree Week, a BioBlitz event drew 90 pupils, teachers, and assistants from Omagh Integrated Primary School, St. Mary’s PS in Cabragh, and St. Joseph’s PS in Galbally. Participants planted 90 trees and over 200 wildflower bulbs, along with winter vegetables, seed balls, hedgerows, and took part in bird-watching and water sampling.
