Irish-Medium Education Sees Sharp Rise in Northern Ireland Pupils
Pupil enrolment in Irish-medium education in Northern Ireland has increased almost 400 per cent in the last 25 years. Department of Education figures show the number grew from just over 1,600 pupils in 2001 to nearly 8,000 today. The numbers continue to rise each year.
The sector faces a shortage of secondary schools. Only two such schools operate in Northern Ireland - one in West Belfast and one in Dungiven. Some post-primary schools offer Irish streams, but these do not meet demand.
More schools are required at all levels, particularly post-primary, to accommodate growth. The Department of Education has not planned adequately for expansion. Its strategy proposal will not be ready until next year and will take years to implement.
Pat Sheehan MLA has proposed legislation to ensure sufficient staff for the sector. The Education Minister must provide investment in Irish-medium education.
