Belfast School Meningitis Case Resolved with No Ongoing Risk
The Public Health Agency confirmed a probable case of bacterial meningitis in a 16-year-old pupil at Bloomfield Collegiate School in Belfast. The pupil required hospital treatment.
Close contacts received risk assessments and antibiotic prophylaxis where appropriate. The PHA worked with the school to issue information to parents and guardians. Guidance went to GP out-of-hours services and emergency departments.
Additional clinical information later showed the illness resulted from another cause, not meningococcal meningitis. The PHA informed parents there is no ongoing risk to pupils or staff. No further public health actions are needed.
Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan, chair of the Assembly's Health Committee, contacted Health Minister Mike Nesbitt for details on preparations and preventative measures against potential spread.
SDLP MLA Justin McNulty asked the minister on March 18 about public health measures to prevent spread following the Belfast case.
The PHA stated the local case shows no link to incidents in England. Families should stay alert for meningitis symptoms and seek prompt medical help if suspected.
