DUP's Buckley Criticises Alliance Over Immigration Remarks and Personal Jibe
DUP MLA Jonathan Buckley has responded to comments made by Alliance politician David Tennyson at the party's annual conference on Saturday. Tennyson referred to Buckley as 'Dame Jonathan Buckley' in a speech.
Buckley stated he did not understand the point of the remark. He described Alliance's characterisation of immigration concerns as 'pantomime politics' as an insult to people in Northern Ireland facing pressures on housing, public services, and community cohesion.
Alliance leader Naomi Long addressed the conference and spoke of 'usual deflection and distraction politics,' including divisive rhetoric on immigration and integration.
Buckley argued that immigration must be lawful, controlled, and fair, but currently is none of these. He called for a properly managed and sustainable system, describing this position as common sense rather than populism.
He accused Alliance of ridiculing such concerns instead of engaging with them. Buckley said this dismissive approach extends to other issues like gender policy.
The Upper Bann MLA linked Alliance's stance to their declining public support, claiming voters see a gap between the party's rhetoric and everyday concerns.
