Ballymena Man Honoured by Mayor for Charity Runs Supporting Children with Additional Needs
Darren Tweed of Ballymena received recognition from the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, at a reception. The event acknowledged his fundraising for charities that assist children and young people with additional needs and their families.
Tweed completed a 100km run on 1 March in support of WAVES, a Ballymena organisation. WAVES provides community programmes to help children with additional needs participate in civic life and offers support to their parents and families.
Tweed and his wife Amber have two children with additional needs. This personal experience drives his efforts to raise funds and awareness through endurance challenges.
In 2025, Tweed ran 21km each day for three days to observe World Down’s Syndrome Day. The 63km total supported a local Down Syndrome group.
Councillor Jackson Minford stated that Tweed's physical efforts and commitment have generated funds and increased awareness for organisations aiding Ballymena families.
