Derry City and Strabane Council Starts EV Charger Installations Next Week
Derry City and Strabane District Council will start installing electric vehicle charging points next week. The On-Street Residential Charge Point Scheme targets residents without private driveways or off-street parking. Chargers will go in on-street locations and council car parks.
The council leads the project for the Northern Ireland EV Consortium. Partners include nine local councils, the Department for Infrastructure, and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. Weev will supply, connect, and operate the chargers.
Installations begin in Derry with Lincoln Court on Wednesday, 18th March, Old Library Trust Car Park on Thursday, 19th March, and Shantallow Library on Friday, 20th March. Crews start at 7.30am each day and work about three days per site.
Further sites are planned for the week of 23rd March at Spencer Road, Spring Hill, Irish Street, and Meeting House Lane. Schedules for Fahan Street and Bishop Street await confirmation.
Mayor Cllr Ruairí McHugh stated the scheme provides needed charging access for residents. He noted it supports sustainability goals and regional Net Zero targets by 2050.
