Derry Man Jailed for Possessing Pipe Bombs Placed Outside Homes
A 38-year-old man from Nelson Drive in Derry's Waterside area has been sentenced to four years in prison for possessing three pipe bomb devices that exploded outside homes. Noel Logan must serve an additional four years on supervised licence after release. The sentence came at Belfast Crown Court on 13 March from Mr Justice Fowler.
Logan faced trial without a jury last year and was convicted on 16 May 2025 of three counts of possessing explosives with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury. His DNA appeared on tape attached to all three devices. Forensic experts calculated a one-in-a-billion match probability for two devices and one-in-1.7 million for the third.
The devices detonated at two addresses in Montgomery Close on 13 November 2017 and 31 March 2019, plus Bonds Place on 3 September 2019. Each consisted of copper piping up to 500mm long, packed with gun propellant, ball bearings, and nails for shrapnel. Army technical officers made remnants safe for examination.
Police arrested Logan during a house search in December 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic. He lived less than 1.5 miles from the targeted sites. Mr Justice Fowler ruled Logan handled the devices, though not that he placed them, and imposed an initial eight-and-a-half-year term reduced by six months for trial delay.
Detective Inspector Mark Gingell noted the blasts caused disruption to residents and communities, with property damage but no injuries despite a child present in one home. He called the investigation complex and thanked victims for cooperating.
