Police are investigating after a pipe bomb-type device was found on a car in the Nelson Drive area of the Waterside in Derry/Londonderry. The discovery was made in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Officers received a report that a loud bang was heard in the area around 12.30am. On arrival, they found a car window had been smashed and a suspected pipe bomb had been left on the windscreen.

Ammunition Technical Officers attended the scene and a safety cordon was put in place for several hours overnight while enquiries were carried out. The cordon has since been lifted and the object has been declared a viable device. It was removed for further forensic examination.

Detective Inspector Connolly appealed for witnesses or anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the area to come forward. The officer particularly asked that residents check any CCTV, doorbell or dash-cam footage that might help the investigation.

The PSNI can be contacted on 101, quoting reference number 30 16/06/26. Reports can also be made online via the police non‑emergency reporting form, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
