Lisburn Council Seeks Suggestions for Yew Tree Marker After Plaque Removal
Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council has opened a suggestion process for marking a Yew tree planted to commemorate 400 years of Lisburn. The tree carries a plaque dedicated in 2009 to the then Duke of York. The plaque was removed last Christmas. The mount for the plaque has since been taken away during a site tidy-up.
Councillor Gary Hynds raised the issue at the council's corporate committee meeting. He asked the CEO if members could submit ideas for a replacement over about a month. Hynds stated that this could transform a negative association with the former prince into a positive for Lisburn.
A council spokesperson confirmed no plans exist to replace the mount at this time. Following the meeting, the council sent a letter to all elected members requesting suggestions to recognize the tree's significance. Responses are due by April 10.
