Donaghadee Commons Targeted for Protection After Machinery Destroys Vegetation
Councillors in Ards and North Down passed a motion at the Environment Committee to seek protected status for the Commons in Donaghadee. The site, known locally as the rough commons, sits above the shoreline.
In January, a locally known individual hired a JCB digger to remove bushes, trees and wild grasses from the area. The action took place on public land without council authorisation.
Councillor James Cochrane stated residents use the space for dog walking. He described the site as a location where vegetation developed naturally over generations. Cochrane proposed the council contact the Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to designate it an area of special scientific interest or similar status.
Alderman Mark Brooks said villagers identified the person responsible. Details were reported to the PSNI, NIEA and council for investigation. Brooks called the act a crime requiring punishment.
Councillor Joe Boyle supported the motion. Councillor Nigel Edmund described the incident as vandalism. Councillor Tom Brady backed criminal proceedings. Councillor Alex Harbinson inquired about civil options.
Council officers confirmed the PSNI is investigating. They plan to consider further actions after the probe concludes.
