Public Called to Object to Proposed Closure of Caledon Primary School
The Education Authority proposes to close St Joseph’s Primary School in Caledon, County Armagh, at the end of the summer term on August 31, 2027, or as soon as possible after that date. The rural school on Derrycourtney Road has been deemed unsustainable.
The Catholic Council for Maintained Schools directed the Education Authority to publish this development proposal. The initial plan targeted closure next August, but an amendment extended the timeline.
Consultations noted that the closure would leave a rural Catholic community without a local parish school, a link in place since 1907. Staff, including a principal, two teachers, three classroom assistants, a secretary, and a building supervisor, would seek positions in other schools.
A public consultation on the proposal is underway. Residents must submit objections by April 9. Local resident Leona May Mac Cana stated the closure would represent a major loss for the village and surrounding area, as the school has served generations and supports community connections.
Mac Cana emphasized that objections from anyone, even non-attendees, aid in preserving local services. She encouraged widespread sharing of the call to action.
