O'Neill Declines UK Briefing on Iran Strikes as Belfast Hosts Rival Gatherings
Sinn Fein First Minister Michelle O'Neill declined a UK government briefing offered to devolved administrations on attacks involving Iran. She called it a military briefing and said attendance would support an illegal war. Scotland's First Minister took part in the briefing. Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly attended with O'Neill's approval.
Expat Iranians assembled on Sunday on the pavement between Belfast City Hall gates and Donegall Square North. The gathering shifted from a planned protest against Tehran's government to a celebration of Ayatollah Khamenei's death in US and Israeli air strikes.
Rev Chris Hudson spoke at an earlier Iranian protest on Valentine's Day in the same location. He discussed his Iranian parishioners and their backing for regime change in Iran. He pointed out that some held jobs as doctors or academics.
A 'Stop bombing Iran' protest took place at the same Belfast spot on Monday night. Iranian opponents of the regime shouted at participants from the side.
