Peregrine Falcons Nest on Belfast Hilton Hotel
A pair of peregrine falcons occupies a ledge on Belfast's Hilton Hotel, a 16-storey structure standing 207 feet tall. The birds sit on the building's edge overlooking the city centre.
Passers-by in Belfast city centre can spot the falcons by looking upward. One falcon perched on the hotel's sign. A flock of pigeons flew nearby, prompting one falcon to fly toward them before returning to its perch.
The pair will lay eggs soon. Peregrines historically nested on cliff faces. Tall urban buildings now serve a similar purpose for them.
Pigeons and starlings provide ample food in the city centre. The main starling roost sits near Albert Bridge, close to the hotel.
Peregrine populations in Ireland number at least 400 pairs. Urban nesting has aided their recovery from past declines.
