Designs unveiled for Belfast Blitz memorial in Cathedral Gardens
Designs for a Belfast Blitz memorial have been unveiled by artists Ralf Sander and Naomi Sander. The memorial results from a partnership between Belfast City Council and the Northern Ireland War Memorial Museum. It will stand in Cathedral Gardens, between St Anne’s Cathedral and Ulster University’s Belfast campus.
Cathedral Gardens is receiving a £5 million redevelopment, with work started in January. The space will include a multi-use events area, a nature-inspired play area and an interactive digital play zone for children. Belfast City Council anticipates the memorial's unveiling in spring 2027, coinciding with the gardens' reopening.
The memorial features a bronze relief drawn from Blitz photographs, focusing on Belfast residents. Visitors will see their reflections in an image of the bombed-out Belfast International Bar, once on the site. It will list names of 952 known fatalities from enemy action during the Blitz.
Belfast endured four raids in 1941: the Dockside Raid on 7-8 April, Easter Tuesday Raid on 15-16 April, Fire Raid on 4-5 May and Final Raid on 5-6 May. Historians Alan Freeburn and Dr Brian Barton assisted the museum by reviewing official sources and government records, and issuing a public call for information.
Belfast Lord Mayor Councillor Tracy Kelly stated that the Northern Ireland War Memorial Museum provided expert support for the memorial in the regenerated gardens. She noted the area suffered heavily from World War Two air raids. Don Bigger, chairman of the museum, said the monument recognises those killed in the city's Blitz raids.
Ralf Sander said he and Naomi sculpted the figures over more than a year. The designs precede the 85th anniversary of the main Easter Tuesday raid.
