East Antrim MLA John Stewart has warned that charities and voluntary organisations in Northern Ireland face a funding crisis. The UK Government confirmed it will keep the current Local Growth Fund arrangements unchanged. A deadline approaches on 31 March, creating uncertainty for frontline community providers.

Stewart stated that the decision maintains the 70/30 split. He said this will affect organisations under financial pressure that require revenue for services, staff retention, and community support. The current setup provides capital funding rather than ongoing revenue.

He noted that reductions in funding streams will put vital services at risk after 31 March. Stewart highlighted engagement from Ulster Unionist Party members, including himself, Andy Allen MLA, and Robin Swann MP. He indicated the Government has not fully assessed the practical effects of these changes.

The MLA pointed out that charities supported communities during public health emergencies and cost of living issues. He called on the Northern Ireland Executive to provide additional or bridging funding to close the gap at the end of March. Without action, services could weaken for those dependent on these groups.
