Killyclogher Nurse Among First Women in Male Ward Dies Aged 84
Bridget Teresa Kelly of Killyclogher, County Tyrone, died on February 20 aged 84. Her funeral took place at St Mary's Church in Killyclogher.
Kelly trained as a nurse and worked alongside Isabelle Hannigan as two of the first women assigned to a male ward at Tyrone and Fermanagh Hospital. The pair advanced to become Ward Sisters.
Born in Drumquin in 1941, Kelly attended Dooish Primary School. She married Magnus Kelly in the early 1960s and the couple lived on St Mary's Road in Killyclogher for 63 years. Her husband died when she was 42.
Kelly later retrained as a social worker, qualified as a driving instructor and served as a marriage counsellor. She participated in a charity walking trip to Cuba at age 65, played golf and belonged to crocheting and coffee clubs in Omagh.
She is survived by daughters Bernadine, Siobhan, Amanda and Ondrea, seven grandchildren and siblings P.J., Alice, Ann, Carmel, Roberta and Liam. Her family expressed pride in the grandchildren and appreciation to the Cappagh Parish community for recent support. They stated she accepted her passing and left behind a substantial legacy.
