Newry, Mourne and Down District Council's Planning Committee approved plans for a 7.4 million pound health and wellbeing hub in Warrenpoint. The decision came at the committee's monthly meeting on 25 February.

The application, submitted by the council itself in June 2023, targets a site in Clonallon Park. Councillors voted unanimously in favour, pointing to benefits for the local community.

A report from the Planning Department recognised the requirement for a community facility in Warrenpoint. It noted that the proposed amenities and open spaces would serve residents well.

However, the department advised against approval. It highlighted conflicts with the site's status as designated public open space meant for recreation.

Planners argued the location opposes planning principles. They had suggested alternative sites to the applicant during review, but none were pursued.
