Council Approves 33 Social Homes for Claudy Village
Derry City and Strabane District Council approved plans for 33 social homes in Claudy village at its March Planning Committee meeting.
The project includes 16 two-storey houses, 16 own-door apartments and one wheelchair bungalow on lands facing Main Street.
The site has been vacant since the demolition of a dwelling in 2014 and is surrounded by housing on three sides.
A council planning officer recommended approval, noting that trees along the Main Street frontage under a Tree Preservation Order will be retained and supplemented with additional planting.
The council received 16 objections over boundary issues, prompting the applicant to submit an amended plan removing disputed areas.
Properties will use red brick, white render and cladding in a consistent design, with a detailed landscaping plan adding planting along boundaries and throughout the site.
Sinn Féin councillor Sean Fleming proposed approval, stating that social housing is urgently needed in Claudy to allow residents to remain near their families.
Committee members voted unanimously in favour, with one abstention.
