Fermanagh and Omagh Council Pays Tribute to Former Councillor Bert Johnston
Fermanagh and Omagh District Council held a minute's silence for former councillor Bert Johnston during a meeting in the chamber. Johnston represented Erne North and served as the last chair of Fermanagh District Council. He was a DUP councillor from 1977 to 2015.
Council chair Barry McElduff noted Johnston's long service and commitment to Ballinamallard. McElduff extended sympathy to Johnston's widow Olive, sons Mark and Paul, and family. DUP councillor Paul Robinson described Johnston as a former colleague who ran an upholstery business in Ballinamallard with his family. Robinson said Johnston founded the Ballinamallard Community Association, maintained street flower baskets, took interest in Necarne, and received an MBE for community work.
Sinn Fein councillor Debbie Coyle recalled knowing Johnston from 2011 and receiving a note with a picture from him. Independent councillor Josephine Deehan highlighted his 39-year record. Ulster Unionist councillor Rosemary Barton said Johnston assisted her as a new councillor and shared work on the Ballinamallard Community Association.
Alliance councillor Stephen Donnelly recognised Johnston's decades of public service in Fermanagh. SDLP councillor Adam Gannon expressed admiration for Johnston's public service. Sinn Fein councillors Sheamus Greene and Tommy Maguire also offered condolences, with Maguire recalling an early encounter upon his return to the chamber in 2011.
The chair extended further sympathy to Johnston's family and friends after the tributes.
