The Northern Health and Social Care Trust's Eating Disorder Service has operated for 20 years. Over the past 15 years, staff treated more than 1,000 patients.

The service marked its anniversary during Eating Disorders Week from February 23 to March 1. Joanne Coyles, Eating Disorder Service Manager for Adults, noted pride in the impact on patients' lives. She described eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa as serious mental health issues that cause physical complications. Coyles emphasised early recognition to aid recovery.

The service aims to help patients understand their condition, build better relationships with food, and achieve recovery in a supportive environment. Carmel Milne, CAMHS service lead for children and young people, stated that eating disorders affect families and carers. Staff work with patients and families using multidisciplinary teams for physical and psychological care to manage risks and promote recovery.

People seeking help should contact a GP for assessment and referral if needed.
