Ulster Schools Athletics expressed sadness at the death of Eamon Harvey, a former Irish Olympic coach. The organisation described him as a leading figure in Ulster athletics and education.

Harvey coached Irish teams at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 1995 World Championships in Athletics. Sonia O'Sullivan claimed gold at that event under Irish management. He also led squads at eight World Cross Country Championships, where Catherina McKiernan earned four individual silver medals, and served on coaching staffs for four Paralympic Games.

In November, Harvey attended the National Cross Country Championships in Derry, where his grandson took bronze in the under-12 race. Finn Valley AC founder Patsy McGonagle met him there and noted Harvey's joy at the result. McGonagle described Harvey as a mainstay in Donegal athletics over five decades.

Harvey helped form Tír Chonaill AC, now among Ulster's biggest clubs, and coached its members across ages. The club represented Ireland in European competitions under his guidance. He worked as a physical education teacher and later as regional development officer for Athletics Ireland in the border area.

Athletics Ireland highlighted his roles on its high-performance committee, coaching and development committee, which he chaired from 2014 to 2018, and its board. In January, he entered the Donegal Sports Star Hall of Fame. Harvey's funeral takes place in Donegal.
