Newcastle AC Athletes Secure Medals and Records at Ulster Schools District Events
Athletes from Newcastle Athletics Club competed in the Ulster Schools’ Athletics Association District competitions across Northern Ireland over the past fortnight. They represented schools including St Malachy’s High School, Shimna College, Down High School, Kilkeel High School, Assumption Grammar and St Louis Kilkeel.
Several secured qualification for the Ulster Schools’ Championships. In the Intermediate girls events, Hermione Sheridan took first place in the 800m and 1500m. Jamie O’Flaherty placed fourth in the Intermediate boys 3000m with a personal best of 10:00.13. Donal McDaid followed in fifth with 11:00.52, also a personal best.
Ronan Grant placed fifth in throwing events with a personal best four metres better than before. Parisa Susay-Quinn finished fourth in the Intermediate girls 800m. Emily McMullan competed in the Senior Girls events.
Aoife Grant earned silver in the Junior Girls hammer with a personal best of 25.22m. She also competed in the 1200m race walk, finishing in a photo finish at 7:34. Connaire Óg McVeigh and Carter Rolston finished the 1500m race separated by one-hundredth of a second, with Carter in first at 4:38.80.
Ellie Moore placed sixth in the Minor Girls 800m with a personal best of 2:45. Harry McVeigh won the Mini Boys 800m in 2:13.93, breaking the district record. He placed sixth in the 100m final.
Saorlaith McAleenan cleared 1.30m in high jump for a personal best. Rossa McAleenan reached 1.21m in high jump. Harry King jumped 3.40m in long jump. Sophie Mayers threw 7.20m in shot put. Zoe Astruc Kidd won her heat in the Minor Girls 100m.
