Lurgan man banned from driving after scrambler collision
Lewis Corey from Elmwood Terrace in Lurgan appeared before Craigavon Magistrates Court on Friday for sentencing after pleading guilty to multiple charges. These included failing to display L plates, riding without protective headgear, no insurance and using a vehicle in a dangerous condition.
Police attended a road traffic collision on Silverwood Road in Lurgan at 9am on June 13 last year. The incident involved an off-road scrambler motorbike not designed for public roads.
Ambulance services were present when police arrived. Corey sustained extensive injuries including head trauma and was unresponsive at the scene. He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital and remained in a critical condition.
A hospital drink-driving procedure was requested but declined by medical staff. Corey holds a provisional driving licence.
Corey's solicitor, Ms Siun Downey, told the court her client did not attend due to his grandmother's death. She stated Corey is unsure about driving restrictions from his medical consultant, which prohibit driving for at least the first year post-incident. She noted the accident's severity, Corey's two-month hospital stay and potential lifelong effects.
District Judge Michael Ranaghan disqualified Corey from driving for three months on charges of no L plates, no insurance and dangerous vehicle condition. He imposed fines of £50 per offence plus a £15 offender levy for failing to wear a helmet and three other charges.
