SSE Airtricity Lowers Gas Prices by 8.1% for Northern Ireland Customers
SSE Airtricity, the biggest natural gas supplier in Northern Ireland, will decrease prices by 8.1% starting April 1. The change affects 215,000 domestic and small business customers.
A typical household on a credit meter in the greater Belfast and west gas networks will save £80 annually, or £6.65 monthly, based on average use. Prepayment meter users will see typical costs fall by £79 per year.
The price adjustment stems from differences between projected and actual gas delivery costs in Northern Ireland. Wholesale gas prices have declined recently amid international tensions affecting energy markets.
Stephen Gallagher, SSE Airtricity managing director, noted that energy expenses continue to worry customers and expressed hope the cut offers relief.
Raymond Gormley from the Consumer Council called the reduction positive, linking it to easing wholesale prices, though he pointed to ongoing market instability.
The Utility Regulator endorsed the move as tied to lower wholesale costs and pledged to track tariffs for further pass-through savings. Leigh Greer, its market regulation head, acknowledged persistent pressures on households and businesses while noting support options exist.
Northern Ireland's regulated gas tariffs, overseen by the Utility Regulator, differ from competitive markets elsewhere. Firmus Energy plans a tariff update soon.
