Millisle couple opens nominations for second 'Paint It Forward' charity makeover
Danielle and Gerard Donaghy, a couple from Millisle in County Down, have opened nominations for their 'Paint It Forward' event on May 30. The initiative will see a team of tradespeople refurbish the building of a selected charity or community organisation free of charge.
The Donaghys operate Paintworks NI and Paintworks NI Academy. Last year, the event transformed the Helping Hands Autism Resource Centre in Dundonald, with volunteers repairing walls, applying calming sensory-friendly colours inside, and refreshing the exterior. Suppliers Axus Décor, Crown Paints and Johnstones Paints provided materials and tools.
More than 30 painters and suppliers have committed to this year's event. Nominations are invited for charities, special needs schools, community centres, homeless support services, mental health organisations, or disability sports teams.
Gerard Donaghy, a parent to a disabled child, said the couple recognises funding shortages for such services. He described the event as decorators giving back using their skills to support unsung heroes in the community.
Danielle Donaghy noted the profound impact of last year's project, creating a bright, welcoming space for families and service users.
Nominations close on March 8. Submissions should be emailed to paintitforward@paintworksni.com, including building details, photos, purpose, reasons for deserving the work, size and location. Further information is on Paintworks NI's Facebook and Instagram pages.
