Eleven Ukrainian students at Slemish College in Ballymena have integrated into the school community nearly two years after fleeing Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Executive Office confirmed that 3,597 Ukrainians have arrived in Northern Ireland under UK government schemes since the invasion began on 24 February 2022.

Roman, who moved from Odessa 18 months ago with his mother due to nearby bombing, stated he enjoys life in Ballymena but misses his family and friends. He described the realisation of not returning home as 'destroying you from the inside'.

Tetiana, originally from Zaporizhzhia, relocated in August 2022 with her mother to rural areas outside Ballymena. She noted the contrast from city life, where 'everybody knows everyone here', and expressed missing her family's privacy.

Yelyzaveta, from Kyiv, arrived in May 2022 with her parents and younger brother. She observed that contact with school friends in Ukraine has diminished as their lives diverged.

Slemish College participates in a British Council programme linking it with Pokotylivka Lyceum No. 2 in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Year 10 pupils from Ballymena hold online sessions discussing books, creative projects, and Ukrainian life, aiding Kharkiv students' English practice.

Local pupils Harry and Ruby reported increased interest in world news and appreciation for their safe living conditions through the programme. The Ukrainian students stated they feel safe in Northern Ireland and hope to return home one day.
