Castlewellan Secure First Ulster Hurling Championship Win
St Malachy's Castlewellan won their first ever match in the Ulster Club Championship on Saturday, defeating Tyrone champions Omagh St Enda's 2-16 to 1-13 at Healy Park.
The Down side advanced to the semi-final of the AIB Ulster Junior Hurling Club Championship, where they will face Monaghan champions Truagh Gaels. That match is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, at Silverbridge Harps GAC in County Armagh, with a 1.30pm throw-in.
Castlewellan midfielder Dara Rodgers was sent off in the first half after receiving a straight red card from referee James McNaughton. He had scored two points before the dismissal. As a result of the red card, Rodgers will almost certainly miss the semi-final.
Also in the first half, Omagh centre-forward Cathal Cunningham picked up a black card five minutes before the break.
At half-time, Castlewellan led 1-8 to 1-6. Omagh levelled the match at 1-8 each within three minutes of the restart, but Castlewellan responded with a goal from Tiernan Connolly and points from Matthew McCabe, Connolly, and Rian Walsh to open a 2-15 to 1-11 advantage.
Omagh had chances to close the gap but failed to score, and Connolly added two late points to seal the win.
