A 25-year-old man has been jailed for 12 months after a series of offences in Derry last July. Matthew Anderson, of no fixed abode, admitted the offences at Derry Magistrates Court.

The court heard that Anderson slapped a mobile phone out of the hand of a 15-year-old before picking it up and throwing it out of the Peace Garden, where it broke a car windshield. He then chased another minor with a glass bottle and threatened to cut his throat. The victim had never seen Anderson before.

Anderson also spat at a civilian detention officer during the incident on July 30.

The offences occurred just days after Anderson received a suspended sentence for what was described in court as a plethora of offences.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman told the court that Anderson's mother was present and that his family were keen for him to address his issues. He said the defendant's mother had been down this road before.

District Judge Ted Magill said the defendant had been dealt with in all sorts of ways before imposing the 12-month prison sentence.
