Derry and Strabane announce Halloween parade route, fireworks times and road closures
Derry City and Strabane District Council has published details of road closures and event times for this year's Halloween celebrations, which mark the festival's 40th anniversary.
The Carnival Parade in Derry will begin at 7pm on Halloween night from Boating Club Lane. It will travel along Strand Road and onto the Embankment before returning to its finishing point at Queen's Quay. A fireworks finale is scheduled for 8.15pm.
The Peace Bridge will be closed to pedestrians from 7pm to 9pm ahead of the fireworks, reopening as soon as it is considered safe. A pedestrian flow system will operate in the Ebrington Square area. Additional temporary parking will be available at Ulster University's Magee car park.
In Strabane, Castle Street will be closed from 7am to 6pm on Saturday 31 October to accommodate family-friendly activities in the town centre. The fireworks display is scheduled for 7pm at the Melvin Running Track. The pedestrian footbridge and surrounding paths at Melvin Running Track will be closed from 6.45pm to 7.30pm. Access to Melvin Road and the Ballycolman Estate will be restricted to residents only between 6.30pm and 7.30pm. Public parking is available at Strabane Sigersons GAA car park or town centre car parks, and accessible viewing is provided at Melvin Arena car park.
The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Grace Uí Niallais, urged people to plan their journeys in advance and follow the advice of Council staff. She also advised residents with pets sensitive to fireworks to take steps to minimise disturbance during the Strabane display between 7pm and 7.20pm.
Derry Halloween's 40th anniversary programme includes the Awakening the Walled City Trail, which runs until Friday evening before the Carnival Parade. The festival is delivered by Derry City and Strabane District Council with support from Tourism NI and The Executive Office.
